Two Heroine Sisters' Festival - March An annual event held in memory of the two heroine sisters who jointly led the soldiers and people of Thalang, as Phuket was known formerly, in repelling the invading Burmese troops after a siege of one month. The statue of the two sisters is a famous landmark near the centre of the island. Many activities are organized to commemorate this historical event.
Sea Turtles Releasing Ceremony – April Phuket used to be where various species of sea turtles came ashore to lay eggs seasonally around the end of the year. The island has a conservation programme to help preserve the turtles, and they are bred at the Phuket Aquarium. When the young sea turtles are mature enough, they are released into the sea in a ceremony at Phanwa Cape, to coincide with the Songkran Festival.
Phuket Vegetarian Festival - September/October One of the most popular and most successful annual celebrations anywhere in Thailand, with virtually the entire Chinese community taking part, along with a large number of local Thais and, indeed, foreign visitors. The Chinese temples are colourful and crowded during this nine-day festival. The most fascinating part of the long event however is the remarkable feats performed by possessed mediums. The food is incredibly good, too.
Patong Beach Festival – November Marks the beginning of the high season for tourist arrivals and is organised by the tourist trade community at Patong Beach. Activities include water sports and tourist beauty contests.
Phuket Laguna Triathlon - December Held at Bang Thao Beach, the Triathlon comprises a 1800-metre swim, a 55-kilometre bike race and a 12-kilometre run. It attracts world-class triathletes from around the world.
Phuket King's Cup Regatta - December The Phuket King's Cup Regatta was first held in December 1987 in celebration of the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Since then, the Regatta has become an annual affair attracting more and more of the region's top yacht enthusiasts among hundreds of participants. It is now recognized as a world-class yachting event due to the top standard racing, the wonderful scenery and sailing conditions. The best place to view this yachting spectacle is from Phromthep Cape, the southernmost tip of the island. |
